New ‘baby’ Octopus goes on display at Bristol Aquarium

A new Giant Pacific Octopus has gone on display in Bristol. Aged just over 6 months, the octopus is a young juvenile and will now grow in her new home at Bristol Aquarium.

The Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) currently measures around just 60cm and will grow to be up to be on average 4metres across.

Bristol Aquarium General Manager, Fenia Vitali said: “Our new octopus is so young and cute we all call her our new baby. So far she has been both brave and inquisitive so we think she will grow to be quite cheeky!
“As the octopus doesn’t have a name yet, our Zoo team have all chosen one name each and we’d like to put the final decision out to the public!” Fenia added.
The five names chosen by the Zoological team at Bristol Aquarium are Andromeda, Diva, Ola, Isla and Gloria. Votes will be collected via the Bristol Aquarium Facebook page and the most popular name will be chosen on Sunday 4th November 2018.
Giant Pacific Octopus are from the North Pacific Ocean. They are adapted to live in cold waters and therefore can be found as deep as 2,000m in the ocean. It is the largest of the octopus species.
Bristol Aquarium is located on the Harbourside and is home to over 4,000 animals. From the cool waters of our local Atlantic Ocean to the tropical seas, visitors are taken on an underwater adventure to experience it all!

** Voting has now closed – our giant Pacific octopus is called Gloria **
Thank you to everyone who took the time to cast their vote!
